Thanks to advances made in technology, heart problems, if any, could be detected in a foetus as early as in its 18{+t}{+h}week. This would help doctors and parents understand the gravity of the problem and decide whether pregnancy could be continued or not since the baby might die after birth or struggle a lot for a few years before death with a cardiac problem.
This kind of problem is noticed in 0.8 per cent of babies and it is mostly due to genetic reasons which result due to consanguineous marriage. The foetal echocardiography is one of the major topics to be discussed during the first conference of the Andhra Pradesh chapter of Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA) being held here on October 31 and November 1.
The details of the conference and the status of radiology and imaging were explained at a press conference by HoD of Radiology of AMC and KGH P. Bujji Babu, who is chairman of the organising committee, secretary of the committee V. Suresh, and other members Ch. Lakshman Rao and K. Ravi Kumar Varma, here on Thursday. The theme of the conference is ‘Practical imaging, from bay side to bedside’. The conference would update the radiologists with latest techniques and developments in the science of radiology, which is fast developing and also benefit the post-graduate students. Incidentally, this is a major radiologists’ conference being held in the city after 14 years and the first in AP after the State was bifurcated. Nearly 200 radiologists from different States are attending.
Noted radiologist Kakarla Subba Rao would be present at the conference. Radiologist V.R.K. Rao would be felicitated by Dr. Subba Rao after delivering the “Dr. Kakarla Subba Rao gold medal oration”.
Developments in radiology have changed the treatment methods also since the latest equipment PET CT scan could find exact location of cancer.
