A 22-year-old medical student died after a lorry ran over her near Maruthi Circle on the Port Road under Malkapuram police station limits on Thursday late night.

The incident occurred when the medical student, along with eight friends, was going to Lambasingi on a pleasure trip.

The deceased has been identified as M. Sri Vidya, a third year medical student of Andhra Medical College (AMC) in the city. According to Malkapuram police, a group of nine friends including Sri Vidya started their journey to Lambasingi from the Convent Junction on Thursday night.

“Sri Vidya boarded the bike of one L. Santosh Kumar. At Maruthi Circle, Mr. Santosh applied sudden brakes and lost control over the vehicle in the process. The bike skidded and the duo fell down. A lorry ran over Sri Vidya, killing her on the spot,” said a police officer.

Sri Vidya’s father works as an assistant manager in a bank at Pendurthi.

Driver held

A pall of gloom descended on the AMC campus after the incident came to light on Friday morning.

Students and faculty expressed their grief over the death of Sri Vidya.

According to police, the lorry driver has been taken into custody and cases have been registered.

Post-mortem has been performed on the body.
