One of the most quoted Telugu poets, whose empathy for the workers and peasants is iconic, Sri Sri was remembered and his poetry recited in tribute on his 105{+t}{+h}birth anniversary in the city on Thursday.

“It is a matter of great pride that such a towering Telugu litterateur is from our city and his works continue to inspire everyone who has a social consciousness,” North Andhra Graduates Constituency MLC M. V. S. Sarma said.

Paying glowing tributes to the revolutionary poet, he said the issues highlighted in his poetry would be true even after decades.

“Sri Sri, through his poetry, has given the city and the region fame and recognition,” member of Sahiti Sravanti Padmanabha Raju said.

Sahiti Sravanti organised recitation of one of the best known works of Sri Sri — Mahaprasthanam — at the statue of the poet on the beach road.

Members of Praja Natya Mandali, including CPI district secretary A. J. Stalin, paid tributes to the poet on the occasion.

Sri Sri was sensitive to the people around him, and through his work gave a voice to the poor and the voiceless. His extraordinary work gave recognition to the struggles of the poor workers and peasants, Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University G. S. N. Raju said. Members of Mosaic, a literary organisation, donated a portrait of the poet to V. S. Krishna Library of AU on the occasion.
