‘Stop targeting road-laying equipment and phone towers’

A large number of tribal people from the interior villages of GK Veedhi and Koyyuru mandals in the Visakhapatnam Agency participated in a rally against the CPI (Maoist), demanding that the banned outfit stop interfering in the development activities in their region, especially construction of roads.

About 200 villagers including women from Pedapadu, Kukumapudi, Nakkabandha, Eetharobbulu, Mallikarjunalu, Theemalabandha, Chinna Agraharam, Pedda Agraharam of GK Veedhi mandal, Jerrigondhi, and Mandapalle, and a few other villagers from Koyyuru mandal, took part in the rally, which started from Kukumpudi to Theemalabandha, covering distance of about two km.

Holding placards and posters such as ‘We need roads,’ the tribal women said that the Maoists should allow the development in the Agency.

Development agenda

In the absence of road connectivity, it was becoming difficult to shift villagers who needed medical attention to hospital. In the latest instance, a pregnant woman died as ambulance was not able to reach Theemalabandha village.

Also, children are not able to attend school, so as the teachers, which is eventually disturbing the education system in the region. The villagers said they also need cell phone towers to be in touch with their family members and relatives, and urged the Maoists not to damage them.

Road works were suspended for over a year in Kukumpudi area after the Maoists torched the equipment. “Maoists should let the development continue,” the villagers said.
