November 18, 2011 11:45 am | Updated 11:45 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

The contribution of Indians in the making of movies is immense, Consul-General of US Consulate General, Hyderabad, Katherine Dhanani , has said.

She was speaking after inaugurating the three-day film festival — Movie Madness-American Films for Kids, here on Thursday. The background of the movies being screened was more Indian, she said. The film festival is being organised in association with the Vizag Film Society with the support of Andhra University.

Ms. Dhanani said the film festival was part of a programme to introduce American culture to Indians and events were being organised outside Hyderabad to reach out to more people.

Rector of Andhra University P.V.G.D. Prasada Reddy said schoolchildren were facing pressure cooker situation both at home and school, and parents were also more interested in their children's studies, ignoring the overall personality development. The situation was different in the U.S. or Japan, where group activity was conducted. This kind of atmosphere would be seen in movies being screened in the film festival, he said.

Director of AU Academic Staff College and president of Vizag Film Society B. Bharatha Lakshmi said movies would reflect the nature-human relationship.

Secretary of the society Narava Prakasa Rao wanted the festival held every year and American parallel cinemas screened here. Later, Ms. Katharine Dhanani said the request would be examined.

Global warming

During a brief interaction with reporters, the U.S. official said good relationship with the young generation would be established through programme like this. The next programme in Visakhapatnam was schoolchildren collecting information about global warming as part of a world-wide survey and the details would be shared with children from other places. A teacher training programme would be held during the next two months. She also informed that a programme on fighting the stigma of HIV and AIDS would be held in Hyderabad during December.
