This messenger of peace was earlier a commando trainer

After the release of the iconic movie ‘Enter the Dragon’, starring legendary martial arts exponent Bruce Lee, in the 1970s, the City of Destiny suddenly took a liking for various forms of martial arts such as karate and Kung Fu. Almost every young mind, fancied by the quick moves of Bruce Lee, wanted to learn martial arts.

It was during this time, one man had risen to the status of a hero in the city, through his proficiency in martial arts. And that was Kona Showry Babu. Now settled as evangelist in Chennai, Showry Babu was here to share his joy on being honoured by the Israeli government. He was recently awarded the ‘True Friend of Israel Award’ by Israeli Parliament and the award was given away by Israeli Foreign and Home Minister Dr. Uzi Landau.

Goodwill ambassador

On why he was given the award, he said, “The bitterness between Israel and Palestine is known the world over. To better the relations and to create an environment of peace between the two countries, I had organised about 100 tours to ancient Biblical sites for people from both the countries.”

Basing on his initiative to foster peace, Showry Babu, who had been the goodwill ambassador for Israel since 2006, was given the award.

Prior to becoming a messenger of peace, Showry left the city during late 1980s to become a martial arts trainer to special forces of about 28 countries.

A sixth dan black belt in karate, judo, aikido, jujutsu, savate, and evade, Showry trained some of the best commando forces in countries such as the Shin Bet of Israel, Spetsnaz of Russia, Royal Commando force of Oman and commando forces in other countries such as Egypt, Muscat, Yemen.

He also imparted training to Israeli Intelligence Service, Mossad, and the FBI in the U.S. Talking about women taking up martial arts, he said, “Keeping in mind the present scenario and crime against women, it is a must that every woman learns at least a few basic techniques to defend herself. Evade is one form, where the focus is on the 73 weak points in a human body. A few techniques and the knowledge of where to strike and how to strike will keep them safe.”
