Police Commissioner J. Purnachandra Rao launching the surveillance systems at Visakhapatnam Railway Station on Friday. Divisional Railway Manager N. Kashinath and Deputy Commissioners of Police J. Brahma Reddy and B. Balakrishna are seen.

The city police, in association with the Railways, Andhra University, and some private entrepreneurs, have opened a new chapter in improving security outside the railway station.

Interestingly, the police chose 11-11-11 to launch the surveillance system. Police Commissioner J. Purnachandra Rao formally launched the surveillance cameras in the presence of Divisional Railway Manager N. Kashinath.

Addressing the gathering, the Police Commissioner said installation of surveillance systems at autorickshaw stands, parking lots, and other vulnerable areas would help police reduce the crime rate considerably and identify anti-social elements.

Around 400 motorcycles are being stolen every year from 20 parking lots in the city.

Mr. Purnachandra Rao said though there was a lot of demand for such surveillance systems, many big companies were not evincing interest in their supply.

MBA students of Andhra University were being involved in creating awareness about the utility of the systems among prospective entrepreneurs and marketing of the products. The experience would help them in their future career.

‘Momentous occasion'

Mr. Kashinath described the occasion as momentous. He, however, said they had a plan to set up integrated security systems at the station. The work was already sanctioned but it could take another six months for completion of the project. The surveillance system would be useful as a stopgap arrangement to improve security in the circulating area of the railway station.

Ganesh of RVR Projects, which is financing the surveillance project, said the project was conceived by the Police Commissioner. The company was sponsoring the project as it was being done by students as a social responsibility.

Deputy Commissioner of Police J. Brahma Reddy said 10 surveillance systems were installed at the railway station. The data back-up would be available for 30 days.

Lakshmipathi, a professor in AU, said the students would float a firm in future. They would primarily concentrate on creating awareness among people about the use of cameras, identification of potential customers.

J. Yugandhar of Yoshita e-Systems said his firm was providing a complete range of CCTV solutions. The company would undertake maintenance of the systems too.

Deputy Commissioner of Police B. Balakrishna, Divisional Security Commissioner Eswara Rao, and Deputy Superintendent of Police (Government Railway Police) Bhima Rao were among those who were present on the occasion.
