Students visit NDRF expo

The Regional Response Centre (RRC) of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has put up an exhibition of its equipment to create awareness among schoolchildren on its premises at Ukkunagaram in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant area on Saturday.

Students of the DAV Centenary Public School were delighted to learn about the equipment and their uses, by the NDRF personnel, who explained to them in detail about their work.

Rasmil Baruah explained about the various types of cutters on display and their use in cutting logs, fallen concrete structures and grills, hammers, air lifting bags to rescue victims trapped under debris, smoke ventilators, power blades and composite blades.

Kartik and Harshavardhan (both 8th class) and Narendra (9th class) said they were excited to learn about the techniques involved in the rescue of disaster victims.

The NDRF personnel from RRC, Visakhapatnam, have rendered yeomen services in the recent train accident at Kuneru in Vizianagaram district, the Hudhud cyclone in Visakhapatnam in 2014 and the Chennai floods.

“NDRF personnel undergo training in swimming, Medical First Response (MFR), Collapsed Structure Search and Rescue (CSSR) and to deal with Chemical, Biological, Radioactive and Nuclear (CBRN) disasters. We have the specialised equipment to deal with such disasters,” RRC in charge Subhash Mahala said.
