There was a visible restlessness in the hall when the topic ‘Waste disposal management and how to make Vizag a clean city’ for essay writing was announced. In just a few minutes, students were ready to pen down their thoughts that went up to 800 words.
The Swarnabharati Indoor Stadium was abuzz with activityas more than 800 students from various government, private and corporate schools headed to the venue to take part in competitions being organised to mark the curtain-raiser of Visakha Utsav.
The two-day event, which began on Wednesday, has been jointly organised by the School Education Department and Phoenix IT Solutions Ltd.
Diverse culture
Inaugurating the competition, Human Resource Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao said that Visakha Utsav would be held as per schedule from January 23 to 25. The festival aims at bringing out diverse culture and tradition of Visakhapatnam to the fore, involving all departments, industries and NGOs on a single platform, he said.
As part of the inaugural day, students (Classes VIII to X) showcased their creative skills in contests such as elocution, essay writing, slogan writing and painting. ‘Visakha Utsav’, ‘imagine re-greened Vizag depicting a landmark’ and ‘means of conserving energy to make Vizag a smart city’ were some of the themes brought alive during the contest.
A two-minute silence was observed to pay respect to those who lost their lives in the bus accident in Anantapur in the morning.
On Thursday, rangoli , collage work and general knowledge quiz will be held at the same venue.
Project Director DRDA Satya Sai Srinivas, MP K. Haribabu, MLAs P. Vishnu Kumar Raju, Bandaru Satyanarayana Murthy, Panchakarla Ramesh Babu, V. Anitha and Vasupalli Ganesh Kumar, VUDA in-charge Vice-Chairman M.V. Seshagiri Babu, DEO M.V. Krishna Reddy and CEO and MD of Phoenix IT Solutions Ltd G.S. Murali Krishna were among those who attended the event.
