Students being used to push drugs in Vizag

Worrying trend: Use of psychotropic drugs among youth is on the rise, according to police sources.

About 10 days ago, a team from the City Task Force (CTF) apprehended a group of youngsters with ganja. While five of them were abusing the drug, two others were said to be peddlers.

The police team found small blotting papers neatly packed in plastic sachets from the two peddlers. Upon questioning, they said the blotting papers were soaked in LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), the drug that rocked Hyderabad a few months ago.

First such instance

This is the first instance of a psychedelic drug being seized in Visakhapatnam. The city is primarily the hub of ganja, and at times the police have seized anaesthetic drugs such as Fortwin injections and Corex syrups.

The two peddlers allegedly revealed that they had procured the LSD from Hyderabad in exchange for ganja.

While one worry for the police is the seizure of LSD, a new entrant into the city, the other is that more and more youngsters are getting hooked to drugs and are becoming part-time peddlers. In the latest case, all those held were students of engineering and MBA from private colleges.

In another recent case, the CTF and the Arilova police, in a joint special operation, arrested three youngsters, who reportedly were ganja addicts and were into the business of procuring and selling the contraband.

According to CTF ACP I. Chittibabu, one of them had dropped out of a Bachelor of Law course and the other two were B. Tech dropouts.

According to the ACP, addiction to drugs, especially ganja, and the money required to fund the addiction is prompting youngsters to become peddlers and small-time smugglers.

Most the young peddlers who were arrested have confessed that initially they were addicts and later turned peddlers to fund their addiction.

And the smugglers are making use of their vulnerability, said Shanmukha Rao, Inspector of the Arilova police station.

Ganja is freely available in the Agency area of Visakhapatnam and the big smugglers supply the stuff in small quantities to college students and dropouts.

“The cost of each cigarette may vary between ₹100 to ₹150,” said Mr. Shanmukha Rao.

WhatsApp groups

The students maintain their customer base through WhatsApp groups. “Most of their customers are classmates, friends and students from other colleges and there are specific code words to convey the stock position, variety of drugs or ganja, price list and meeting place,” said the inspector.

The hotspots for procuring the weed include NAD, Chavulamadham, Railway Station road, Allipuram and Beach Road stretch.
