The air was filled with fun and excitement, as men teamed up to be part of the Sindhu Premier League and women the Sindhu Tennikoit League. Entertaining them at SFS High School on Sunday morning was Sindhi Panchayat on the occasion of its annual get-together.

What has changed over the years is the title of the tournament, which has been rechristened Ashok Kumar Memorial Cup.

“In 2010, I lost my father Ashok Kumar. The tournament was renamed after him in 2013, as he was so fond of cricket, ,” recalls Karan Kumar, who was the captain of the winning team — Sona Super Kings.

The other three teams in the tourney were — Kanchan Warriors, Chandu’s Shining Stars, and Dayaram and Karachi Challenges.

“Though we all belong to the same community, when it comes to the tournament, a sense of competitive spirit prevails,” says Harish Idhnani, captaining Chandu’s Shining Stars.

Women, who made their way to the venue, say that a get-together such as this brings them close to one another.

“In our daily lives, we hardly find time to meet our cousins and friends. This kind of a platform helps us have loads of fun,” says Khushi Idhnani, before heading to the ground to play basketball.

The day for the community started at 7.30 a.m.

“Since it was drizzling in the morning, we decided to go for basketball instead of tennikoit tourney for girls. In all, 40 members took part in the cricket match and more than 20 women came forward to play basketball,” said Raju Jhurani, one of the organisers.
