Sacrifices of police martyrs recalled

Police Commemoration Day observed. Principal District and Sessions Judge V. Jaya Surya participated as chief guest at the programme organised by the city police.

The sacrifices made by men in uniform were recalled by speakers at the Police Commemoration Day held on the Beach Road on Wednesday.

Police Commissioner Amit Garg, Superintendent of Police (Visakha Rural) Koya Praveen, and other police officers paid tributes to the martyrs at the Police Martyrs Memorial.

Principal District and Sessions Judge V. Jaya Surya participated as chief guest at the programme organised by the city police.

The names of 443 police personnel who had sacrificed their lives in the line of duty at various places in the country were read out on the occasion.

The contribution made by the police during Hudhud came in for special praise.

Home Guard Vasupalli Yellaji, who had rescued 180 persons from drowning in sea during the last nine years, was presented a cash reward by the Police Commissioner.

Mr. Jaya Surya presented prizes to the winners (schoolchildren) of various competitions, which were organised in connection with the Police Commemoration Week.

At the District Police Office, Dr. Praveen and other officers and personnel paid rich tributes to the 24 policemen who were killed by the extremists. Dr. Praveen interacted with the families of martyred policemen and handed them over a cheque for Rs.5,000 each.

The family of Naga Appa Rao, which was in financial difficulties, was given Rs.25,000.
