Rain pushes up levels of reservoirs

June 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Following good rain during the past few days, water levels in various reservoirs improved leading to GVMC temporarily suspending pumping of water from Yeleru reservoir dead storage and the lifting from Kateru near Rajahmundry.

The pumping from Yeleru reservoir was suspended from June19 when rains began. However, no final decision has been taken to stop pumping.

“The situation will be assessed after two, three days as inflow into the reservoir is continuing,” said sources. Pumping from Yeleru reservoir to regular domestic supply began on April 10.

As on Monday, the water in the reservoir stood at 69.5 meters against the minimum of 68.8 meters.

Visakhapatnam does not generally receive rain during the southwest monsoon and in spite of summer being over June continues to be a critical month.

But this time the rain has been good improving the situation, say officials.

The water that is flowing in the canal owing to rain during the last few days is about 130 to 140 mgd.

If pumping is continued there is a possibility of canal breaching owing to too much of pressure.

While roughly 30 mgd is supplied from the canal to cater to the city supply, around 34 to 35 mgd is drawn from other reservoirs --Tatipudi, Raiwada, Meghadrigedda -- among them.

The levels in the other reservoirs have also improved. As a result, the situation is quite satisfactory.

Raiwada reservoir now stands at 109.2 meters against the minimum of 99 m, MGR 290.9 ft (minimum 251 ft) and MGR 53.6 ft (44 ft).
