CPI (M) polit bureau member Brinda Karat on Saturday said she was devastated by the brutal assault committed on a child in Delhi and demanded immediate prosecution of policemen who not only tried to hush up the case but also bribe the rape victim’s relatives.
“Now I think many will wonder that India is not only unsafe for women but also children. It is shocking that even children were being looked at as object of sexual gratification,” she said. Ms. Karat was here to attend the national executive meeting of Adivasi Adhikar Rashtriya Manch.
“We should be ashamed to say that we are developed,” she said and favoured stringent punishment awarded against those making sexist comments. Those committing sexual offences and passing sexist comments deserved strong punishment as per law.
It was unfortunate that policemen, who were supposed to take prompt action against offences against women, were totally insensitive to the issue at a time when the nation was yet to recover over brutal gang-rape of physiotherapy student in Delhi in November, 2012.
