With the model code of conduct for the general election in force, the City Police have rolled up their sleeves to restrict the flow of unaccounted cash, liquor and control poll related violations.

As part of the bandobust, 25 police check-posts have been set up in the city limits, while 23 flying squad teams comprising three police personnel and three revenue employees each have been formed to conduct raids at places vulnerable to violation of model code of conduct.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) M. Ravindranath Babu said that an action plan had been drawn to stop the flow of unaccounted cash and other violations.

“Checkings are being done by the teams at various places. On Thursday, unaccounted cash of ₹ 22.5 lakh was seized in two separate cases. We will coordinate with the Income Tax officials. If people can’t furnish valid documents accounting for cash, it will be seized. Flying squads are also monitoring the possible illegal hoarding of liquor,” said Mr. Ravindranath Babu told The Hindu .

Submission of weapons

The police records suggest that there are 723 licence holders for 818 weapons in the city. More than 580 licence holders have submitted their weapons by March 12. Except for the security personnel at banks and a few other cases, others need to hand over the fire arms immediately, the police said.

“Many people who have shifted to the city from other regions are yet to register their weapons. They need to do it immediately and deposit their weapons,” City Police Commissioner Mahesh Chandra Laddha said.

As many as 1,854 polling booths will be set up in the city limits, of which 464 situated in 174 different areas are suspected to be ‘problematic’.

“Special focus will be laid on these booths by ensuring additional bandobast including security arrangements,” the DCP said.

Meanwhile, the police have identified active rowdy-sheeters and counselled them, in view of the elections.

“As many as 1,500 persons including rowdy-sheeters and political trouble mongers have been bound over. The number may cross 2,000 by the end of the next week,” Mr. Ravindranath Babu added.
