Plea to erect ‘panchamukhi’ Buddha in sea

A new demand has been made to erect world’s tallest Buddha statue on a rock in the sea near VUDA Park and Old Light House to attract tourists.

Stating that a big rock formation, within 150 metres from land, had surfaced near VUDA Park, the AP Deep Sea Fishing Technocrats’ Association on Tuesday urged Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu develop the area as a tourist spot by erecting the ‘panchamukhi’ statue of the Buddha.

Association president Capt. N. Venkateswarlu said a 354-ft. statue of the Buddha was erected with three faces recently at an island in China.

“The rock that surfaced in the city is above the tidal level. This can be developed into a more beautiful place by erecting the statue,” he said in a letter to Mr. Naidu.

Capt. Venkateswarlu recalled how North Andhra had been a centre for spreading Buddhism. Trained Buddhists used to sail in boats from Kalingapatnam, Bhimunipatnam, Rambilli, Machilipatnam, Antervedi, Nizampatnam, Kothapatnam, Ramayapatnam, Vodarevu, and Krishnapatnam to various places.
