Pipeline leaks again

It leads to continuous flow of water at VUDA Colony

November 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

A major leak to either Thatipudi or Godavari water supply pipelines has led to continuous flow wasting water.

The leak is said to be somewhere near Gopalaptanam junction close to the Rytu Bazar. Though the leak was earlier arrested after a laborious effort by the Water Supply wing officials, it recurred on a bigger scale now for the past two to three days. The water is flowing down the drains through VUDA Colony at Gopalapatnam.

A leak to the pipeline was brought to the notice of MLA P.G.V.R. Naidu during his morning visit and participation in Swachh Bharat in the first week of last month. He immediately spoke to Water Supply officials.

Subsequently, the staff of Water Supply dug out at a few places to detect the leak and repaired at a few places. No leak was detected in the Thatipudi pipeline that runs about 60 km to the city. No major problem was detected but the leak continued. Carrying out the digging itself was difficult as it had to be done in a small place with hardly any room for employing machines, according to sources.

“Pursuing trial and error method in the absence of any other leak detection mechanism, we closed the Thatipudi pipeline and checked the Godavari pipeline to Narava,” said official sources. The leaks were identified and arrested.

The leak was again reported to GVMC on Monday morning. After that two executive engineers that deal with the two pipelines are put on the job to detect the source of the leak.

The flow of water continued till Monday evening.
