A colony in Gopalapatnam was flooded after a major water pipeline burst on Thursday night.

The Tatipudi pipeline beneath a shop on the BRTS Road burst near the BSNL office. Water gushing from the pipeline tore down a wall close to the office and inundated the open space near the VUDA Colony and the Government Maternity Hospital. As the areas got flooded suddenly, the worried residents gathered near the hospital.

As they watched, water hit another wall with force, leading to its collapse. The debris came crashing down a car parked near by, damaging it badly.

“Seeing the water, I ran about 50 metres to safety,” said a youth who watched the wall collapse. “We hardly knew what happened and just saw water flowed with force for about half an hour,” said Swamybabu, a resident of VUDA Colony.

On being alerted, the municipal officials rushed to the spot. “The valves have been closed. Repair will be taken up immediately. However, water supply to the area will be affected for a day,” Superintendent Engineer (water supply) Pallam Raju told The Hindu .
