Naxalites call for bandh

June 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

The CPI (Maoist) has given a call for week of protests starting July 1 against ‘fake encounters’ on the Andhra-Odisha border and a bandh in the Malkangiri-Visakha-Koraput area on July 6 and 7.

A press release by the CPI (Maoist) secretary of the Malkangiri-Visakha-Koraput divisional committee, Venu, said the governments’ decision to set up police camps and outposts in the area and its tactics of making illegal arrests and inducing fake surrenders are aimed at repressing the tribal people of the region. The Maoist party said the governments of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha were letting loose terror on the tribal people in the name of development. Police have forced the tribals through torture to issue statements against CPI (Maoist), the party alleged.

The recent ‘surrender’ of 20 tribal people in Boithili and Killamkota panchayats was evidence of such tactics, it said.
