February 09, 2015 02:16 pm | Updated June 13, 2016 01:59 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

The fourth edition of multi-beam surveyor course, a capacity building initiative of International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) among the members-countries of North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission was launched here on Monday.

The IIC Academy, learning arm of IIC Technologies specialising in geospatial services with campuses at Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, is imparting the course here. Visakhapatnam Port Trust Chairman M.T. Krishna Babu, who inaugurated the course, said that the syllabus designed by the IIC Academy would benefit in conducting various hydrographic surveys.

Officials from India, Egypt, Bangladesh, Oman, Myanmar, Seychelles and Mauritius are attending. “We have nominated by IHO, an inter-governmental organisation, to conduct the course, which is first of its kind by a private institute,” IIC President Shekhar Murthy told The Hindu.

The course consists of practical sessions on-board a survey boat and theoretical classes that will be led by bathymetric experts, Veronique Jegat of Canada and Chris Harper of UK.

Mr. Murthy said IIC Academy was the only non-government institute in the world to introduce internationally recognised S8 and S5 category B courses in nautical cartography and hydrographic surveys.

The academy also offers courses on photogrammetry, LiDAR, GIS and surveying for students and professionals with science and engineering background. IIC’s innovation centre at Hyderabad conducts applied research in geospatial sciences to absorb new technologies and methodologies.
