In her one-year-and-five-month stint as Additional Commissioner, M. Janaki took a keen interest in key civic issues in the municipal corporation. The Government on Tuesday issued orders posting her as Collector of Nellore district.

Apart from closely monitoring implementation of various projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Mission, she took up the tangled issue of Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) pilot project at Suryatejanagar.

With the residents not agreeing to G+2 structures, she held detailed discussions with representatives of residents and NGOs leading to resolving the issue. The final detailed project report was prepared by Dunu Roy of Hazards India, a New Delhi-based NGO.

Ms. Janaki oversaw the decentralised solid waste management that was implemented in GVMC. Besides, she went to Delhi and Pune to study the vexatious solid waste disposal issues and the environmental aspects concerned.

She was also instrumental in sending a team of NGO representatives and GVMC officials to Pune to study the working of a rag-pickers’ co-operative there. Subsequently, a co-operative comprising 1,580 rag-pickers was formed.

Ms. Janaki was in-charge Municipal Commissioner after Hudhud struck causing unprecedented devastation in the city. Along with other senior officials she closely monitored the situation and relief activities.

A 2005 batch IAS officer, she was the first IAS officer to be posted Additional Commissioner of the GVMC.
