A three-member committee investigating the alleged kidney racket at Sraddha Hospital submitted its report to Collector K. Bhaskar on Saturday night, after which the Collector ordered the immediate closure of Sraddha Hospital.

The committee comprising District Medical and Health Officer S. Tirupathi Rao, District Coordinator for Hospital Services (DCHS) Mr. Nayak and KGH Superintendent L. Arjuna was directed to examine cases of kidney transplantations done at all private hospitals in the city over the last five years.

Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Bhaskar confirmed that he had received the report.

“Since the transplant was prima facie illegal, I have ordered for a shutdown of the hospital by the DMHO. The report further reveals many such illegal transplants done by the same hospital. The committee has been asked to review all transplants done by private hospitals in Vizag city in the last five years and submit a report within 15 days,” Mr. Bhaskar said.

Throughout the morning, the final report that includes fact-findings and details about the transplantations done by the hospital was prepared at Mr. Arjuna’s chambers at KGH.

It may be recalled that after the illegal kidney transplantation racket case came to light on May 9, the collector had formed the three-member committee on May 10. Since May 13, the committee has working on it.

Sources said that the hospital has reportedly performed 62 transplantations, of which a whopping 29 cases have been found to be done illegally.

SIT formed

City Police Commissioner Mahesh Chandra Laddha has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the kidney racket case. The SIT will be led by ACP (West) Devi Prasad, and will be assisted by Inspector MR Peta Kesava Rao and three Sub-Inspectors.
