Emandi Vandana (52), an assistant professor of microbiology at the King George Hospital (KGH) died of dengue while undergoing treatment in a private hospital on Wednesday.

Dr. Vandana had fever since October 21 and she underwent treatment at the KGH and went home when her condition improved the next evening.

With the fever relapsing, she was admitted to a private hospital on October 23. She developed breathing problems and was put on a ventilator.

“She was put on a ECMO (Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation) machine on October 29, when her condition deteriorated,” P.V. Sudhakar, principal of Andhra Medical College (AMC) said on Thursday.

“Dr. Vandana had tested positive for dengue in the ELISA test. We are, however, yet to find out whether she had co-morbid conditions which could have resulted in her death,” DMHO S. Tirupathi Rao told The Hindu .
