Initiative to augment stock in blood banks

June 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

The district administration has decided to encourage government employees to donate blood to augment stocks at the blood banks in government hospitals. A mega blood donation camp will be organised for the purpose. Blood banks are mostly dependent on the camps held in colleges, where student attend in large numbers. “But due to summer vacation, the blood banks face deficit stock between February and May,” blood bank organisers informed Collector N. Yuvaraj during a review meeting on the capacity of blood banks and their stocks recently. Mr. Yuvaraj assured them that government employees would be encouraged to donate blood so that the blood banks stocks reached the required level.

The capacity of blood banks at KGH, Govt. Victoria Hospital for Women and Children (Ghosha hospital), and Area Hospital at Anakapalle is 750, 120, and 100 units respectively. It would be increased and other Area Hospitals would have adequate stock, he added.

Earlier, during a review on maternal mortality rate in the district, Mr. Yuvaraj expressed dissatisfaction over 20 deaths since April.

Area Hospitals would have adequate stock of blood. Counsellors would be appointed at KGH to guide patients and their attendants from rural and Agency areas to the right doctor or ward.
