Indus Towers’ green initiative

Indus Towers Limited, a joint venture set up in 2007 by Bharti Infratel Ltd, Vodafone India and Aditya Birla Telecom, has increased the number of green sites in Andhra Pradesh circle comprising AP and Telangana to 4,450.

The green sites, where telecom towers are maintained with advanced energy solutions such as fast-charging batteries and alternatives to diesel generators through which the company wants to reduce its carbon footprint. As of now, 32 per cent of towers in AP circle have been declared as green sites.

Under the initiative, the company converted 2,140 sites from indoor to outdoor by shutting down the ACs. Almost 90 per cent of all new sites are developed without AC to significantly reduce carbon emission and pollution, Indus Towers Circle CEO Sujit Sen told reporters on Thursday. “We are able to reduce our diesel consumption by 13.29 lakh litres – a reduction of around 29 per cent compared to our consumption in 2013-14,” he said. AP circle is on top in number of towers with high density. “We are expecting a huge potential for further growth with plans to develop Visakhapatnam as a smart city with the support of the United States and develop a world-class capital at Amaravati,” he said.

On Telangana, he said they were planning for huge expansion in Warangal and Karimnagar where there was lot of growth potential.
