Housing plan for Hudhud-hit fishermen faces hurdles

Besides CRZ restrictions, the proposed land locates in high tide area

June 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

The Hudhud-affected fishermen of Peda Jalaripeta will get houses in all likelihood in G+1 structure.

Though government has land at Madurawada and Kommadi to relocate the fishermen they are not willing to move out. Past experience had shown that though houses had been allotted elsewhere fishermen had not gone there and instead rented them out.

With the fishermen unwilling to relocate, the administration is making efforts to construct the 300 houses in situ. But with part of the land falling in the CRZ area, the permission of the District Coastal Management Authority is required. Besides, necessary precautions are to be taken since the land falls in high tide area also. Some of the houses already constructed by fishermen are on encroached land.

At a meeting of the Coastal Management Authority here on Tuesday, District Collector N. Yuvaraj asked the National Institute of Oceanography scientist in charge V.S.N. Murthy to give his opinion on the suitability for construction.

Prof. D S R Murthy of AU Civil Engineering Department has been asked to provide technical guidance for suitable construction.

Besides the government, various organisations will come together to construct the houses contributing corporate social responsibility funds.

The housing for fishermen is part of a mega housing project comprising 10,000 houses for Hudhud-affected. Of that Visakhapatnam gets 6,500, Vizianagaram 1,000 and Srikakulam 2,500.

Marina proposed

Permission has been sought to take up construction of a marina opposite Coastal Battery in view of the International Fleet Review in February next, Mr. Yuvaraj said. Crew and representatives from various countries would reach there and the Indian Navy would make arrangements to receive them there. Joint Collector J. Niwas, Environment Engineer Lakshminarayana, VUDA Chief Urban Planner R.J. Vidyullata, Tourism Information Officer A. Sirisha, ZP CEO Maheswar Reddy and Housing District Manager Prasad participated.
