Hinduja power plant: report to be submitted to government

November 19, 2011 03:09 pm | Updated 03:09 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

The views of people facing displacement following the setting up of the Hinduja thermal power plant at Palavalasa, the compensation to be paid to them and other problems to be addressed will be submitted in a report to the government through the District Collector, Municipal Commissioner B. Ramanjaneyulu has said.

He recalled that permission was accorded to the plant in the past and the then Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao laid the foundation for it.

The management had sought renewal for construction in March for which a demand notice of Rs. 171 crore had been sent.

However, the plan was changed necessitating payment of Rs.51 crore.

But only Rs.19 lakh was paid leading to the returning of the application for approval, Mr. Ramanjaneyulu said on Friday.

‘No approvals'

Meanwhile, CPI(M) floor leader in GVMC Botta Eswaramma and party city secretary B. Ganga Rao said the power plant had not obtained approvals and demanded that work, reportedly going on, be stopped.

Ms. Eswaramma, part of the GVMC team that went on the visit on Thursday, said the visit was merely nominal and instead of going to 12 villages they met people only in three and wound up the visit sensing the mood of people.

‘No R&R package'

She told reporters that as no relief and rehabilitation package had been announced to the villages that are to be affected by pollution, no permissions should be given to the plant.

Besides, no public hearing was held for the setting up of the plant and unless it was done construction should not be taken up.

All the permissions given to the plant stand cancelled as it was not taken up in 1996 when it was first planned to be set up, she contended. In view of the factors, NOC should not be issued by GVMC for the plant, Ms. Eswaramma said.

Mr. Ganga Rao wanted work to be brought to a halt until the NOC was obtained. Only after employment to the families to be affected by the plant was ensured work should be taken up. Farmers cultivating the land and farm labourers should be given financial assistance.

He alleged that it was being given concessions on various fee to be paid.
