The State government has identified 94 hazardous industries in Visakhapatnam area and categorised them into four based on their threat perceptions, Principal Secretary, Land and Disaster Management, J.C. Sharma, said on Wednesday.
He told The Hindu on the sidelines of a conference on chemical (industrial) disaster management that due to pressure by the government, the industries were convinced to install safety equipment at a cost of Rs.30 crore.
Mr. Sharma said learning lessons from Cyclone Hudhud, they had decided to take into consideration threat due to disasters at the time of planning construction of various buildings.
“Several buildings that had glasses suffered extensive damage. While approving plans, GVMC should approve them only when sufficient provision has been made for minimal damage during a disaster,” he said.
