Highlighting that genetic factor plays a bigger role in contracting breast cancer, R.V. Ravi Kanna, an internal medicine consultant at KIMS ICON Hospital has said that women with a family history of cancer are at higher risk.

“Attaining puberty before 12 years of age and delayed menopause make women more vulnerable to breast cancer,” he said in a statement as breast cancer awareness began on Tuesday.

Mortality rate

Despite the increasing rate of incidence, annual mortality rates in breast cancer have decreased over the last decade, he said.

Dr. Ravi Kanna attributed the drop in mortality rate to regular screening and mammography which ensures early diagnosis and treatment.

Awareness campaign

Referring to awareness campaign, he said that women must be sensitised in four key factors– risks, early diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

“Breast-feeding and physical activity can reduce the risk of breast cancer,” Dr. Ravi Kanna said.
