Funds released for bridges in Agency

January 05, 2015 01:09 am | Updated 01:09 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Transportation and communication facilities to the tribal mandals of Pedabayalu and Munchingput in the Agency area of the district are set to improve with the government sanctioning funds for construction of high level bridges over the Matsyagedda River at Shobaputtu and Munchigputtu.

The tribal people of Pedabayalu and Munchingput had been risking their lives by travelling by native boats to cross the river in the absence of road connectivity.

The demand for construction of a bridge across the river has been long pending.

ITDA Project Officer V. Vinay Chand apprised Secretary Tribal Welfare Hrishikesh Panda, during his visit to the Agency areas last month, of the risk being faced by the tribal people of the two mandals in crossing the river in country boats for their daily needs.

The PO also followed it up with the Secretary during his visit to Delhi and made efforts for the release of funds.

The Tribal Welfare Department has issued a GO on Saturday sanctioning Rs.15 crore to the Pedabayalu bridge.

The Centre had also sanctioned an additional Rs.5 crore as additional assistance for the Munchingput bridge.

Proposals have been sent to the Engineer-in-Chief of the Tribal Welfare Department for technical approval.
