Vizagites are gearing up to celebrate the spirit of Friendship Day in style on Sunday and are spoilt for choice when it comes to gifts and events dedicated for the day. From DJ events to customised gifts and bands in city stores, the options are plenty.

The celebrations began a day ahead with college campuses and schools abuzz with excitement as the youngsters exchanged Friendship Day bands with their friends.

At a few playschools and kindergartens, the celebrations were held on Friday itself.

The city stores were teeming with attractive friendship bands. But the highlight this year was on customised gifts. “Coffee mugs printed with pictures of friends are quite a hit with youngsters. Bespoke products have a different charm,” says Yashwant Parekh of Darlings Paradise.

City hotels and pubs have lined up a series of events to mark the day. From ‘silent disco’ to live band show, hotels like The Gateway, Novotel and pubs like Somaa Restobar and Myz-Uno are organising music nights to make the day memorable.

‘Buddy workout’

While the party mood is prevalent everywhere, some are preferring to spend the day with their friends in meaningful ways.

The ‘Pinkathon Girls’ group held a ‘buddy workout’ programme on Saturday morning to spread the message of staying fit and healthy among their friends. Fitness trainer Deepa Deval led the team and helped the group to have a relaxing workout session.

Handmade chocolates

Many college students have made plans to celebrate the Sunday evening with their buddies over a cup of coffee or a film in the theatres. Priti Shankar, an engineering student, is planning to spend an hour with five of her friends at a café and gift them a box of handmade chocolates.

“I spend the day making the chocolates. Each of box will come with a personalised message for each of them and a picture of us together,” she adds.
