Four Maoists surrender in Vizag

The area committee members were involved in several serious crimes like committing murderrs, participating in famine raids, and destruction of cell towers.

Four CPI (Maoist) naxalites - two of them members of area committees, and two militia members surrendered to Visakhapatnam Superintendent of Police Koya Praveen here on Tuesday.

The four surrendered naxalites are Vanthala Chinnam Naidu (30), Pongi Somaraju (19), Pongi Chanti (20) and Pangi Rambabu (30).

Chinnam Naidu, who is also known with aliases Sannam Naidu and Abraham of Cherukupalem village in G.K. Veedhi mandal and an active member of the Galikonda area committee, carries a reward of Rs.1 lakh on his head. Pongi Somaraju of Thatidoulu village in Chintapalli mandal is a member of Korukonda area committee; while Pongi Chanti (20) of Cherukumpalem in GK Veedhi mandal, is a militia member working in Galikonda area and Pangi Rambabu (30) of the same village is another militia member.

The area committee members were involved in several serious crimes like committing murderrs, participating in famine raids, destruction of cell towers, blasting of government buildings, etc. The militia members were mostly providing logistic support to the Maoist groups moving in the forests, participating in Maoists' meetings, cutting trees and placing them across the roads, etc., Mr. Praveen said.

Additional SP (operations) and OSD of Narsipatnam Vishal Gunni and Deputy Commandant of CRPF Kishore were also present.

The four Maoists decided to surrender after watching the police parties regularly visiting villages and conducting meetings. They also had the fear of dying in police action due to ill health and there was pressure from their families also, which played key part in their surrender, the SP said.
