A former software employee from Hyderabad was arrested on Tuesday on charges of posting a fake profile of Joint Director of Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) on a matrimonial website and duping many women of more than ₹10 lakh.

According to police, preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused had duped six women and they are now investigating to ascertain if there are more victims.

Modus operandi

The accused has been identified as Macharla Shyam Mohan, a resident of Hyderabad city and a former employee of a software firm. Shyam Mohan allegedly had duped a divorcee doctor from the city to the tune of ₹1 lakh after promising to marry her.

“Shyam Mohan is married and father of two children. A divorced doctor aged around 35 years had registered herself with a matrimonial website to look for prospective grooms. She allegedly received a request on the site from the accused who reportedly introduced himself as the ACB Joint Director with a salary of ₹50 lakh per annum,” DCP (Crimes) A.R. Damodhar told the media here.

Shyam Mohan allegedly claimed that he was living in Bengaluru and began to chat with the woman. Both decided to get married. “Later, Shyam Mohan allegedly told the woman that he had chosen a house in Bengaluru and asked her to send a few AC units for installing them in the house. Believing him, the woman reportedly sent two ACs to the accused through a transport company. After receiving the AC units, Shyam Mohan allegedly stopped taking her phone calls and avoided her. Realising that she was duped, the doctor lodged a complaint with the police,” the DCP said.

Based on the complaint, Cyber Crimes Police Station Inspector V. Gopinath investigated the case and nabbed the accused.

His modus operandi was to con divorced women and widows through the fake profile on the matrimonial websites, he said.

“Shyam Mohan allegedly had duped many women from various cities in the same fashion to the tune of more than ₹10 lakh. We have recovered ₹70,000 from the accused and investigation is on,” Mr. Gopinath added.
