An 11-member team, including two women officers, from the Eastern Naval Command successfully climbed Mt. Mentok Kangri in Rupshu plateau in Eastern Leh on Sunday.
The mountaineering team embarked on climbing the 6250 mt peak in the end of May.
The expedition included a week’s approach trek from Tsokar lake, crossing four high passes, ranging from 4800 mt – 5400 mt and then reaching the base camp at 5300 mt. The team could finally summit the peak after a daunting and extremely challenging summit climb of 11 hours, including climbing a 70 degree wall of around 350 mts.
The team had to traverse through glacier and encounter chilly winds at 10-15 knots and occasional snowfall throughout the climb.
The team also undertook yoga practise en route as a run up to the International Yoga Day being celebrated on June 21 across the world.
The team was led by Cdr Amit Kumar was assisted by three Sherpas and they established six camps en route, including the summit camp at 5450 mts. The women officers include Lt. Anjum Kaistha and SLt Priyanka Gusain.
On reaching the summit, the team members unfurled the national flag and the Naval Ensign, atop.
