Every year, some 350 persons on an average die in road accidents in the city, of which about 30% deaths are due to head injuries. And, the victims were without helmets, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police (traffic) K. Prabhakar.
To highlight this issue, 39 women, wearing helmets, participated in a rally organised by Hampshire on Sunday. The women, who are Mrs. Vizag semi-finalists, decided to use the platform to spread awareness on road safety. In the rally, which began at Kali Temple, the participants held placards with slogans like -- ‘Safety rules are your best tools,’ and ‘Wait for red, don’t end up dead.’ One of the contestants, Ms. Santoshi said: “If our effort influences even a few young people, their parents do not worry when their children go out on motorbikes.” Lakshmi, one of the organisers, lamented that not many follow traffic rules which was a cause for concern.
Mr. Prabhakar said: “Spreading awareness is as important as enforcing the rules.”
