Domestic water needs in summer will be met, says Ramanjaneyulu

‘Supply to industrial and bulk users will be reduced if necessary'

March 14, 2012 03:18 pm | Updated 03:18 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Water supply to industries and bulk users will be reduced if necessary, but supply for domestic needs will be maintained during summer.

Municipal Commissioner B. Ramanjaneyulu said on Tuesday that the supply ranged from half an hour to one hour.

Sometimes, a few areas at the end of the line were not getting supply. There were also complaints about timings being erratic.

Mr. Ramanjaneyulu was confident that regular supply would be maintained for domestic use and, if necessary, supply to industrial and bulk users would be curtailed.

As it is, the supply, as against the Government of India prescribed standard of 135 litres per day per person, varies from 85 litres to a low of 65 litres.

The present supply is far from what the City Development Plan, prepared prior to the launch of the JNNURM in 2005, envisioned.

The CDP stated that the supply ranged from 45 minutes to one hour and proposed to increase it to 120 lpcd by 2011.

The situation is no different now. As against 520 million litres a day (mld) capacity (114 mgd) only 321 mld (70 mgd) is being supplied now.

“Nearly, 40 per cent of water being pumped or brought by canals is going waste due to pilferage, old pipelines, or unnecessary storage without proper use,” Mr. Ramanjaneyulu said.

To plug loopholes and increase efficiency in the One Town area, the GVMC has proposed the Rs.83-crore project that would come up for discussion at the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee meeting of the JNNURM on March 23.

Supply augmented

Officials say the situation is quite comfortable as of now with water levels at the Yeleru and Raiwada reservoirs, among others, being good.

The present supply to residential category is of the order of 40 million gallons a day (mgd) as of now. It has increased from 36 mgd after inauguration of a new scheme at Gajuwaka.

The supply to bulk users is about 15 mgd. For steel plant and other industries, the supply is 33 mgd.

According to sources, the levels from the Yeleru reservoir, the main source to the city, and Raiwada would help the GVMC tide over the summer crisis.

Thereafter, officials pin hopes on early onset of monsoon.
