Societies of specialities and sub-specialities have a role to play in improving the quality of medical education, T. Raviraju, Vice-Chancellor of NTR University of Health Sciences, said while inaugurating the 24th annual all-India conference of the Indian Society of Otology here.

The societies can help the university in starting post-doctoral fellowships in focussed areas and the corporate hospitals and single speciality hospitals could be recognised for the purpose. The doctors and students could improve their skills and the society would be benefited with a better quality in service, Dr. Raviraju said.

He also wanted the doctors to take up research since not many clinical doctors were engaged in it. Through research, the much-needed epidemiological data on common diseases could be prepared. This data was not available in India and researchers could help, he said. The Vice-Chancellor invited specialists and seniors in professions to be visiting professors or faculty of the university so that the students would get benefited by their expertise.

Screening camps

Dr. Raviraju also wanted the ISO to conduct screening camps in schools to detect hearing problems among the children at a young age so that they could be successfully treated. Chairman of the organising committee S.K.E. Appa Rao presided. He said nearly 7 per cent of the population in India has ear-related problems. President of ISO A. Sambandan said the society was started in 1991 and expanded in a short time. Secretary Ravi Ramalingam said next year’s conference would be held in Kerala. A website of the conference was launched.

The organising committee felicitated founder president and secretary of ISO K.K. Ramalingam and A. Mahadevayya respectively, Dr. Raviraju, noted otologists from abroad, Ranco Trabalzini of Italy, Melville Da Cruz of Australia and Hassan Wahba of Egypt. Organising secretary S. Suryaprakasa Rao said that nearly 1200 delegates, including 40 from other countries are participating in the three-day conference.
