Doing away with cumbersome door numbers, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation area will have digital door numbers once the ongoing rationalisation process is completed. The digital door numbers conform to international standards and will have a combination of area followed by an assigned street number and door number. The three digit door numbers start afresh for each street.

It comes as a result of the survey on revenue database updating taken up in all the 110 urban local bodies of the State under the World Bank-funded Andhra Pradesh Municipal Development Project. Municipal Commissioner M. Hari Narayanan said the main idea behind the exercise was rationalisation and easy identification. “It is first taken up in Zone III and will be implemented all over the city and Anakapalle and Bhimunipatnam,” he said.

Pilot project

A pilot project has been taken up in Zone III of the city covering 43,000 assessments and the survey completed and the door numbers will be fixed very soon, it is learnt. The door number along with QR code retaining the existing street name will be affixed in Zone III. The digital door number will also have a QR code that can be used for payment of bills or making complaints. For the present, for apartment complexes only one door number will be given.

With geo-tagging properties and digital navigation, digital door numbers help improve civic services, emergency response and easy access for food or courier delivery. An App will be developed with which the location can be searched by entering the digital door number. It will also be integrated with the ‘Puraseva’ App that is already available.

Eighty per cent of the survey for the city comprising five lakh assessments also has been completed, it was learnt.

The team members have been given a tab with an App for taking photos, entering details of assessment numbers, owners, tenants, plinth area along with photo, Aadhaar and mobile number.
