An employee of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) and his wife have gone missing after sending a video-recorded message to their family members, in Visakhapatnam on March 28.

In the selfie video, the couple, identified as Varaprasad, 47. and his wife Meera, 41, residents of Tirumala Nagar under Duvvada police station limits, said they were ‘leaving’ and requested their relatives to take care of their daughter and son.

Upon seeing the video, the relatives alerted the couple’s son Krishna Sai Teja, 19, who rushed to the Duvvada police station and lodged a missing person’s complaint. He also submitted the selfie video that was sent by his parents before they went missing.

Police immediately registered a case and launched a search.

“The last location of Varaprasad’s mobile phone was traced to Koppaka village in Anakapalli mandal. To be precise, the exact location pointed to the Yeleru canal. We went there and found Varaprasad’s two-wheeler, his mobile phone and his belongings near the canal. A police team with the support of a few locals are conducting a search operation in the canal,” said Inspector of Duvvada Police Station, Srinivas Rao. Apart from Krishna Teja, the couple have a daughter who is married.

Police said Varaprasad, who works as a master technician at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, had been facing severe financial hardships since the COVID-19 pandemic. More details are awaited.
