Collector Pravin Kumar has called upon all departments to make coordinated efforts to minimise road accidents. He directed officials concerned to act tough on motorists indulging in over speeding, over loading, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without licences and book cases against them.

Presiding over the District Road Safety Committee here on Tuesday, the Collector said the committee would hereafter meet on every third Tuesday in accordance with the directions of the State government. He asked all the departments, associated with road safety, to come out with plans to improve road safety along with the funds that would be required for implementation of the same by the next meeting.

All the traffic safety works in the urban areas should be completed by July-end. Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) officials said they had sent proposals for central lighting works in the city for a total length of 16 km, at an estimated cost of ₹5 crore, under the 14th Finance Commission funds.

Mr. Pravin Kumar directed the officials to clear the bushes and encroachments on the National Highway and put up road sign boards. He directed the District Panchayat Officer Krishna Kumari to ensure provision of lights in all panchayats abutting the National Highway in the district. He asked the Roads and Buildings officials to construct speed breakers on the Beach Road and on other roads in the city, wherever necessary.

He asked the GVMC and Police officials to make a joint survey for setting up of multi-level parking on the Beach Road. He called upon officials of the police, transport and all those connected with implementation of road safety to make field-level inspections on the works being executed to improve road safety and submit a report at the next meeting.

Special drive

Deputy Transport Commissioner S. Venkateswara Rao said a month-long special drive was conducted by the Transport Department in which 3,196 cases were booked and 346 driving licenses were suspended. The special drive would be continued to improve road safety.

He said the government has issued orders that if more than three deaths occurred in a single accident, the Road Safety Committee should analyse the reasons for the same and initiate remedial measures. He informed the meeting that no such accident had occurred in the district this month.

City Police Commissioner T. Yoganand, Superintendent of Police Rahul Dev Sharma and officials of GVMC, R & B and Panchayat Raj were among those who attended.
