People's organisations, political parties and environment protection groups gave a joint representation to the Collector on Tuesday demanding the government to take immediate action to control pollution in the city and its surroundings, which has crossed the stipulated limit and increasing every day.
In spite of the people, several organisations and political parties repeatedly making representations and agitation over the release of toxic gases and pollutants into the air by the industries, no Minister or people's representative came to the rescue of the people, whose health was being adversely affected, said the memorandum.
Before submitting the memorandum, leaders of the organisations and political parties P.V. Ramana of APCLC, S.V. Ramana of the Dalita Vimukti, K.S. Chalam of IAPL, Gonthina Nageswara Rao of the Telugu Desam, Venkata Lakshmi of POW, P.V.N. Madhav of BJP, Ali Khan of the organisation protesting pollution and the plans to shift one town residents, B. Sanyasamma of the Dalita Vimukti's cultural wing and J.V. Ratnam of the Movement for People-Centred Development staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate.
‘Most polluted'
Visakhapatnam has become the most polluted place in the State and is among the 24 worst polluted cities even as industries of all kinds and the two major ports were polluting the air, water and earth, they regretted.
They demanded the GO No. 913 issued in 1987 handing over the hills in and around the city to the Forest Department to rise forests, must be revived, cancelling an order issued in 2005 handing over the hills for construction activity.
