City rises early for International Yoga Day

Hundreds of residents perform Suryanamaskaram and yogasanas at major junctions and in parks

Hundreds of residents across the city observed Yoga Day by participating in mass yoga programmes held in neighbourhoods on Friday morning.

A group of 300 people including children performed yogasanas and Suryanamaskaram near the Alluri Sitharama Raju Statue in Seethammadhara.

Payakaraopeta MLA G. Babu Rao, who participated as chief guest in the programme, said that our ancestors had devised this wonderful method to bring synergy between the human body and nature. He added that performing yoga would ensure one’s health and well-being.

Around 60 Special Police Force (SPF) personnel participated in the Yoga Day programme held at the DLB Ground at Kailasapuram. Inspector Danayya said policemen could unwind through yoga and added that they were practising yoga for an hour a week.

Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) Limited organised a ‘Mass Yoga’ programme for its employees at its head office in Visakhapatnam.

The programme was conducted under the guidance of Rajesh Tripati, managing director. Capt. P.M. Saravanan, HOD, HR Department, led the yoga session and shared his personal experiences about the advantages of practising yoga on a regular basis.

D. Appa Rao, yoga master from the Divine Life Society, demonstrated various kriyaas and asanas and guided the participants to perform yogasanas as per the Common Yoga Protocol. All the Heads of Department and employees participated in the programme.

Employees of State Bank of India (SBI)’s administrative campus in the city also participated in Yoga Day celebrations. Deputy General Manager Y. Sathyanarayana Prasad led the employees in practising Suryanamaskarams and other yoga postures and spoke on the benefits of practising meditation and pranayam.

The District Administration too conducted a mass yoga programme under the auspices of the AYUSH Department at the Swarna Bharathi Indoor Stadium here on Friday.

Prof. Ramesh from Andhra University, who coordinated the programme, led the officials in perform yogasanas.

MLC P.V. Madhav, Metropolitan Commissioner Basanth Kumar, Additional Joint Collector Venkateswara Rao, DRO Gunnayya and RDO Tej Bharat were among those who participated.

Senior BJP leader and former MLA P.V. Chalapathi Rao described yoga as “India’s gift to the world”.

At Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Kishore Chandra Das, Director (Personnel), RINL, inaugurated the yoga session. A large number of VSP employees and their families, members from Art of Living, Brahmakumaris, Chinmaya Mission and Junior Chamber of India (JCI) and CISF participated.

At Waltair Division, Divisional Railway Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, Additional DRM (Infra) Akshay Saxena and ADRM (operations) P. Ramachandra Rao, officers and staff performed various asanas.
