Candlelight demo organised

A candlelight demonstration was organised near the Gandhi statue opposite Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation on Wednesday evening to express solidarity with the people of Orissa opposing the Posco steel plant there.

‘Large-scale damage'

Though the government constituted committees had sent reports that the proposed plant would result in large-scale damage to the environment, the Central Government still gave permission for the plant much to the chagrin of adivasis, dalits, fishermen, artisans, farmers and agricultural labourers in Govindpur and Dendia regions of Jagatsinghpur district, leader of the Movement for People's Centred Development JV Ratnam who organised the demo here said.

Prominent leaders Ch. Narasinga Rao (CPI-M), M. Pydiraju (CPI), Praja Spandana president CS Rao, POW state vice-president M. Lakshmi, Human Rights Forum State general secretary VS Krishna, Virasam leaders Chalasani Prasad and Krishnabai participated.
