Cancer treatment: focus on psychological intervention

June 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

With a view to designing multidimensional psychological intervention to build up resilience in cancer patients, a research is being conducted at the Department of Applied Psychology, GIM, GITAM University.

The research aims at testing the feasibility of the intervention and its incorporation into the treatment regimen, so as to enhance the efficacy of the therapy. The researchers are conducting these studies under the guidance of Dr. Deepa Mohan.

Various studies have shown that cancer patients undergo a plethora of psychological disturbances right from the diagnosis of cancer till the completion of treatment and that the psychological wellbeing also has an impact on the extent of recovery of the patient.

However, in the Indian clinical setting, the role of psychological interventions to enhance the mental health and wellbeing of cancer patients is not paid much attention, said by Dr. Mohan. She said that a very few hospitals understand the need for supportive counselling treatment, post diagnosis of cancer and during the treatment process. Understanding and incorporating supportive psychological interventions as part of the cancer treatment would be instrumental in reducing the psychosocial impact of the disease on the patient and is extremely necessary for better recovery, both physiologically and psychologically, she added. Dr. Mohan can be contacted at 09440319062 or 09848159620.
