In an effort to put an end to the inhuman exploitation of ‘Paalapitta’ (Indian Roller or Blue Jay), a common State bird for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, from poachers and bird catchers, The Launch Pad has partnered with Humane Society International, an NGO, to reach out to students and encourage them to play a role in the rescue operation of these birds.
The organisers visited Delhi Public School, Lawson’s Bay Colony, recently and emphasised the importance of protecting the endangered species before their population starts dwindling.
“Since sighting Blue Jay is considered auspicious during Dasara, the demand for the species goes up a couple of months before the festivities. Those who plan to exploit the situation to earn some extra bucks try to trap the birds and slice off their wings to prevent them from flying. Later, the wings are glued using an adhesive. This cruel practice should be stopped,” says Sangitaa Sehgall, founder and master trainer of The Launch Pad.
Once the wings are cut, the bird catchers will transport them to different places in card boxes. In the process, the injured birds will die due to suffocation.
“Through our campaign, we want to bring awareness on the issue and inspire the young minds to play a role in saving the bird,” says Sangitaa.
‘Despite being protected under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and violating it attracting a penalty or imprisonment or both, not many bird catchers are paying heed to it,” the organisers said.
Students who participated in the programme signed post cards urging Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to take measures to stop the cruelty meted out to the State bird by poachers.
