Boost to tourism: Rushikonda in Visakhpatnam is among the 13 beaches in India that have been selected for ‘Blue Flag’ project.

The development works undertaken at Rushikonda Beach as part of the ‘Blue Flag’ project are going on at a brisk pace and are expected to be completed by the June-end, the officials have said, adding that the ‘Blue Flag’ certification would earn Rushikonda a place on the global tourist map.

Rushikonda is the sole beach in Andhra Pradesh which has been selected among the 13 beaches in India by the Central government for development as part of the ‘Blue Flag’ project which has become popular in Europe and the U.K. in the last few years.

The Central government had sanctioned ₹7.3 crore for development of the necessary infrastructure at Rushikonda.

“An open gymnasium and children’s play area have already been developed and 16 beach cleaners, two supervisors and a beach manager have been appointed to ensure cleanliness of the beach round the clock. The beach cleaners are working in eight-hour shifts,” District Tourism Officer and Nodal Officer for the Blue Flag project R. Purnima Devi told The Hindu .

Certification criteria

The basic criteria for getting the ‘Blue Flag’ certification are safe and secure beach, free from pollution, good water quality and environmental education for the beach users.

The authorities can apply to Denmark-based Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) for the certification after the all these parameters are met. Pune-based BVG Constructions is implementing the project.

“A solar power plant has been proposed to meet the power requirements of the project and two watch towers with bamboo structures will be set up. All the infrastructure works are expected to be completed by the June-end. Then the Government of India will apply for the Blue Flag certification,” Ms. Purnima Devi said.

Upcoming facilities

Having finalised the project in February last year, the Central government called for tenders for creation of amenities such as bio-toilet blocks, grey water treatment, water vending kiosks, solar treatment facilities, walking and jogging tracks, bathing area and a solid waste management unit.
