Beware of tricksters at ATMs, say police

‘They are at work in places where two machines are located'

The police have cautioned people against conmen at ATMs who try to mislead people and withdraw money.

Police Commissioner J. Purnachandra Rao, based on two incidents that took place at an ATM at Pendurti, said inquiries made led to the conclusion that two men were duping people at places where two ATMs are positioned next to each other.

One of the two men makes an ATM non-functional, and when a customer next to him tries it, he finds that it is not working. The man directs the customer to the other machine, but keeps the transaction alive in the first ATM. Police say, the tricksters have come out with a technique for it.

When the customer operates the other machine, his accomplice manages to find the PIN and balance, the police said in a press release. It is informed to the first man, who continues the transaction on the first machine and withdraws money. Pendurti Circle Inspector Sk. Hussain said two such incidents happened on Friday, where two persons lost Rs.30,000 and Rs.10,000 respectively. The Police Commissioner said that customers withdrawing money, particularly where two machines were located, should be careful about such tricksters. Anyone falling prey to such tricks should report to the ADCP (Crime) on 9440904323 or ACP (North) on 9440796008 to the Inspector, Pendurti 9440796039.

Bank managers also should bring any such incidents immediately to the notice of the police, the release said.
