The City Police arrested eight persons on Saturday and are on the look out for a few more persons, who were allegedly involved in attacking a traffic policeman on duty, following the death of a housewife in a road accident.

It may be recalled that A. Ananda Rao and his wife Padmavathi were returning from a temple on their motorcycle at Autonagar junction on May 26.

A lorry hit the motorcycle and Padmavati fell on the road and came under the wheels of the lorry.

Local people alleged that the constable removed the key from the running motorcycle, which resulted in the accident.

Holding the traffic constable responsible for the death of the woman, passers-by attacked the constable.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order, North Zone) Navin Gulati told the media that investigation revealed that the constable was manning the traffic due to failure of traffic signal lights.

The accident occurred a few metres away from him after the lorry hit the motorcycle. He said the constable ran to the spot to save her but she had died on the spot. He said the local people beat up the constable without ascertaining the facts. Eight persons were arrested by the police on charge of attacking a policeman on duty and damaging public property, based on the videos taken at that time.

He claimed that there was no truth in the allegations that the constable had removed the keys of the motorcycle.

The DCP said the protesters damaged the constable’s motorcycle and a Police Rakshak vehicle of Gajuwaka apart from overpowering the policemen and causing a traffic jam on the National Highway.

He also said baseless reports were posted on social media, damaging the image of the police. Action would be initiated against those who posted the reports on social media sites.
