Anyone can crack the Common Admission Test (CAT), the entrance examination for admission into the country’s premier B-Schools such as the IIMs. What is required is a focussed approach with the will to excel, says Arun Sharma.

The famed author of books relating to quantitative aptitude for CAT and the founder of Mindworkzz, a Delhi-based CAT coaching institute, Arun Sharma was here to launch the first Mindworkzz franchisee in Visakhapatnam on Friday, and he squeezed some time to interact with The Hindu on how students should shape up for CAT.

“It is a difficult examination but can be cracked. If I being an average student all through my student life could crack CAT in 1995 to join IIM-Bangalore, anyone can,” he said.

According to him, cracking CAT is teamwork of the student and the trainer. “A student comes to a coaching centre at a very critical juncture. It is for the trainer to effectively transfer the knowledge within the set time frame. And for that to happen one needs to change the way of thinking,” he said.

Adding on he said, “A typical Indian mindset thinks of examinations and marks. One has to go beyond that. The sense of excellence should be engrained in one’s mind. And it is a team effort, involving both the student and the teacher.”

According to Mr. Arun Sharma, CAT can be cracked both by engineering and non-engineering graduates. “It is a myth that it is cracked mostly by engineering graduates. It is a fact that 70 per cent of the aspirants are engineering graduates, and the percentage of engineering graduates qualifying the examination is hence more. But is does not suggest that non-engineering graduates do not fare well,” he said.

The examination is equally open to both, and it is all about raising ones intelligence level on relevant issues, he added.

According to him, two years of preparation was sufficient to get a decent score and a focussed approach would pay dividends. “It is all about logic and the solution to any problem is embedded within the problem. It is up to the student to recognise it,” said Mr. Sharma.

According to Mr. Sharma, Visakhapatnam was the first city to get a franchisee nod from Mindworkzz and it was given to Aptitude Experts.
