Andhra University teachers stage protest

February 16, 2012 02:08 pm | Updated 02:08 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Faculty members of Andhra University staged a demonstration in front of the Central Administrative Office building (Registrar's office), under the banner of AU Teachers Association here on Wednesday demanding the Government to pay the UGC revised pay-scale arrears, increase the age of retirement and other demands of teachers in State universities. In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister through the AU authorities, the AUTA wanted him to direct the State Government to pay the arrears of UGC 2006 revised pay-scales and hike the age of retirement on superannuation to 65 years to attract young talent as well as retain the experienced faculty.

In the States ruled by non-Congress parties, the governments had already implemented the packages but not in AP resulting in the Union Ministry of HRD refusing to reimburse 80 per cent of the additional financial burden to the State. If the package was not implemented the teachers in AP would lose Rs. 600 crore of their salary arrears.
